When do I need gynecology care?

What can I expect during a routine gynecological appointment?
Dr. Burke performs both a general physical and gynecologic examinations.
The general physical exam includes checking:
- thyroid gland
- neck
- heart
- lungs
- breasts
- abdomen
- arms and legs
This is followed by a pelvic examination that includes:
- A speculum and digital vaginal exam.
- cervical cancer screening (Pap and HPV testing) when indicated
- cultures
- wet mounts
- vaginal cytology
- possibly, transvaginal ultrasound or biopsies (performed when indicated)
Gynecological patient consult
Following this examination, each woman consults with Dr. Burke in the privacy of his
consultation office. The patient’s medical history and physical findings are reviewed and explained. If needed, prescriptions are given and further testing is ordered. Treatment choices are discussed and agreed upon. Follow up visits to assure a good result are then scheduled.
